Elsie Bell McCarty Lewis
1923 – 2009
OTISFIELD — Elsie Bell McCarty Lewis, 86, died Sunday, Dec. 13, at her home.
She was born in Frye, Oct. 10, 1923, the daughter of Earl Fleur and Ida May (Rich) Weeks.
She attended Stephens High School in Rumford and North Yarmouth Academy.
She married Charles Linwood Lewis on Dec. 31, 1945, in New Hampshire. Her passion was for animals of any sort. She supported many animal rights organizations her whole life and also sponsored several overseas children every month for more than 50 years. Many dogs and cats were fortunate to have “adopted” her over the years and she leaves behind her beloved Sister and Sassy cats.
She and Charles spent summers on Little Sebago Lake in the early years and the lake held a special place in her heart. She lived many years in Gray before moving to Otisfield in 1992. She worked at Sullivan photo shop and local area A & P Tea company stores.
She is survived by her brother, Earl McCarty of Fairhope, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Pollie Weeks of Dixfield; a niece, Judi Weeks of Dixfield; a nephew, Tom Weeks of New York; and children and grandchildren of husband, Charles; also her dear friends, Dorothy Kimball of Gray and Cindy Hamel of Norway.
She was predeceased by her parents; a daughter, Alana Lee Small; her brothers, Sewall B. and Richard E. Weeks; and her husband, Charles on Dec. 6, 2000.
