LEWISTON — Road crews will close both lanes of Lisbon Street where the Maine Turnpike passes over them for a short time on Tuesday, Dec. 22.

State road crews will remove a 101-foot steel beam under the turnpike’s southbound lane between Sabattus and Lewiston as part of an ongoing effort to widen the road, resident engineer Charlie Myers said.

“It’s part of the demolition work that we like to get finished in the winter so that we can spend more time pouring concrete in the summer,” Myers said.

The work is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, and should last 25 minutes. Lisbon Street traffic will be stopped in both directions for the duration of the work.

Work widening both north and southbound lanes of the turnpike is scheduled to be completed by June 2011. Southbound turnpike traffic has already been detoured off the Lisbon Street overpass and onto the northbound side. Tuesday’s work should not interfere with turnpike traffic.

Myers said the state would be back some time in January to remove the second support beam from the southbound turnpike bridge. Both beams should be reinstalled in May, he said.
