NORWAY — Helping Hands – Helping Others Community Meals is adding a holiday dinner to their December schedule. In addition to the regularly scheduled evening meals on the first and third Thursdays of every month, a dinner will also be served on Wednesday, Dec. 23.

The meals are served at 5 p.m. at the First Universalist Church, 479 Main St. All are welcome and there is no charge for the meal, but donations are welcome.

The Helping Hands – Helping Others Community Meals are sponsored by the Progress Center. Clients and staff of the Progress Center prepare the meals. Volunteers from the community also help with preparation, serving and clean up.

The Progress Center recently received approval from Norway Planning Board to proceed with renovations to their Cottage Street location. This will create a fully licensed kitchen that would also be a community or shared kitchen.

When complete, the commercial kitchen will provide a Community Center where classes could be taught and local food producers could create added value products for retail sale such as jams, relishes and baked goods. The kitchen would also mean the community suppers could be served at Cottage Street in a more cost effective manner and increase participation for all those supported at the Progress Center.

A local architect will provide designs and support a bid process for local contractors. The Planning Board of Norway voted that a building permit shall be issued to the Center and renovation is expected to start sometime after the first of the year and should be completed in early summer of 2010.
