RUMFORD — Heavy snow forecast for late this week is just what Le Paresseux Snowshoe Club needs.

The annual Fraternal Showshoe Union of Maine and New Hampshire is hosting snowshoe races for all age groups from six clubs in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts on Saturday, Jan. 9, at Hosmer field.

Stephen Gallant, a member of the local club, said between 60 and 70 snowshoe racers are expected for the event that begins at noon on the track of Hosmer Field.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Waldo Street snowshoe club building.

Those who wish to try snowshoe racing who are not members of a club are also welcome to register and participate. About 10 local members are expected to take part in some of the races.

Age groups range from tiny tots to those over 50, as well as male and female categories, with corresponding lengths of the individual races. Relay races for both males and females will also be held. Registration fee for the day is $3.

This is the second race so-called “runners” from Le Paresseux will have participated in this season, Gallant said. Future races include those in Biddeford in mid-January, Montreal in late January, Sunday River later in the season, then again in Biddeford.

Winners from Saturday’s races will receive medals. Trophies will be given for best female racer, best male racer, and best overall racer.

Sandwiches and soups will be available through the morning and afternoon at the clubhouse.
