MONMOUTH — Monmouth Community Players will hold auditions for “I Remember Mama,” a heartwarming play about an immigrant Norwegian family, on Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 13-14.

Auditions will begin at 6 p.m. at Cottrell Elementary School on Academy Road. Interested actors will be asked to read directly from the script, copies of which are available at Cumston Library.

The play written by John Van Druten follows a Norwegian family as it makes its way in San Francisco in the early 1900s.

Based on the book “Mama’s Bank Account,” written by Kathryn Forbes, “I Remember Mama” opened on Broadway in 1944, produced by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It ran for 713 performances and marked the Broadway debut of a young Marlon Brando.

“We have roles for all ages and encourage families and newcomers to join in the fun,” said Christine D. Heckman, who is directing the play.

The cast includes Mama, age 40s-50s; Papa, 40s-50s; Katrin, teens to 20s; Nels, teens to 20s; Christine, teens; Aunt Jenny, 50s; Aunt Sigrid, 40s-50s; Aunt Trina, 30s-40s; Uncle Chris, male, 60s-70s; Dagmar, girl, 10-12; Mr. Hyde, any age; Mr. Thorkelson, 40s-50s; Doctor, any age; Arne, boy, 8-10; and Florence, 40-60. Also, a good tempered cat.
