DEAR SUN SPOTS: First, let me give my appreciation for your wonderful column. I am a longtime advocate of Lewiston High School sports. I read the sports page to see what sport is being played for that date. The next morning I look for the results and, more times than not, there are no box scores (particularly in basketball).

Why are these results not in the paper the following day? Who is responsible to put these scores in?

Please know that I cannot attend these games and look forward to seeing how the team did. I also recognize some of the athletes, as they are kids whose grandparents I went to school with, and it is fun to see the familiar names.

Hopefully you can find an answer, and I can look forward to seeing the results in the sports pages. I realize there are many schools and sports to cover, and your reporters can’t attend them all. Perhaps you can provide some assistance, so I can continue to participate in supporting events by reading the results. Thank you from a 60-year alum. — M.A.G., No Town

ANSWER: Sun Spots put your question to Steve Sherlock, who runs the sports department at the Sun Journal. Here is his answer:

“I wish our staff could cover every deserving event. We have 21 high schools that consider the Sun Journal their local newspaper. During the winter season, those schools offer more than 100 varsity teams. That number doesn’t include local colleges, the Maineiacs and other sporting events.

“The Sun Journal only has four full-time sports reporters. So, we are dependent on the coaches to call us with their game results. The vast majority of them do an exceptional job at reporting their games — win or lose. I would estimate that we get nearly 95 percent of the games reported to us.

“Sometimes, the games don’t get called in until after deadline. Sometimes, there is a miscommunication between the two coaches as to who is responsible for calling the newspapers. There could be an injury or some other emergency. And, yes, sometimes a coach decides not to call. It’s disappointing to us, too, when there are games missing.”

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for your great column. We are in need of ski pajamas, which we used to order from a catalog. The name was Munsingwear sleepwear. We would greatly appreciate knowing where we can find them. — No Name, Lewiston

ANSWER: Sun Spots had never heard the term ski pajamas before. She couldn’t find a precise definition, but it seems that they are a type of pajamas with elastic cuffs at the ankle and wrist.

Munsingwear was founded in 1887 as the Northwestern Knitting Co. According to a posting on www.answers.com: “George D. Munsing left New York in 1886 to establish a textile factory in Minneapolis, Minn., along with two associates from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Frank H. Page and Edward O. Tuttle. While superintendent of Rochester Knitting Works, back in New York, Munsing had experimented with knit fabrics and ribbing and hit on a process to plate silk on wool, thus creating an itchless material. The company’s first products were knit underwear for women and men.”

There is still a Web site for www.munsingwear.com, but rather than online sales, it offers mostly links to other sites. Sun Spots followed those links, but they were mostly dead ends. She did find women’s ski pajamas at the Vermont Country Store (1-800-776-5730); men’s ski pajamas (in medium only) at www.chockcatalog.com (800-222-0020), and one man’s extra-large left at www.americanintimates.com (718-252-6444). Sun Spots cannot figure out if the difficulty in finding them has to do with changes at Munsingwear (on some of the Web sites it says that this product has been discontinued by the manufacturer) or simply the fact that many outlets reduced their orders for this winter because of the weak economy and now have empty shelves.

Sun Spots tried to track down the catalog, but had no luck. If you click the “our company” link on the munsingwear.com page, it
leads to the Perry Ellis Web site, where it says to check back soon for
a new season of Munsingwear. Perhaps a shopping savvy reader will know of some local store with your pajamas.
