NORWAY – The Norway Memorial Library is coordinating volunteers to take part in the national Martin Luther King Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 18, by offering two hours of community service at nonprofit organizations in Norway.

The participating organizations include Fare Share Food Co-op, Western Maine Land Trust, The Unitarian Universalist Church, the library and the Norway Historical Society.

Volunteer work will include minor carpentry jobs, washing out bulk bins, cleaning shelves and repacking bulk food into smaller bags, all at Fare Share; baking cookies for the community lunch at the church; Roberts Farm Trail work for the Western Maine Land Trust; and filing work for the historical society.

There will also be a sign up sheet for people who want to volunteer to help the Norway Downtown Association, which will have work during the spring, summer and fall.

The community service program is open to adults and teens in grades seven through 12. Volunteers will meet at 12:30 p.m. at the library for a brief introduction and will head out to their designated sites at 1 p.m. for two hours of work at the organizations. They will return to the library at 3:30 p.m. for a program of reflection
and refreshments that will end at 4 p.m.

The service in the community is held on King’s birthday, a national holiday, to honor his legacy with “A Day On, Not A Day Off.” Call Norway Memorial Library at 743-5309 to sign up as a volunteer or for more information. The deadline to register is Thursday, Jan. 15.
