NORWAY — A Harrison woman was charged under the state’s new distracted driving law after crashing her vehicle while attempting to get her fallen cell phone from the backseat.

According to Officer Jeff Campbell of the Norway Police Department, driver Jessica Morrill was cited for failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle following the 6:06 p.m. one-vehicle crash on Hayes Road in Norway. Morrill, 30, was driving in the direction of Patch Mountain Road and was approaching the intersection when the accident occurred.

Campbell said Morrill told officers that she dropped her cell phone and was reaching behind her to get it when she lost control of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee that she was driving, went off the road and hit a tree.

Campbell said that Morrill and her passenger, 19-year-old Danielle Giansanti, were taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. He said that there was extensive front-end damage to the Jeep estimated at between $3,000 and $4,000.
