AUBURN — A man and his dog were injured in a vehicle rollover on the Auburn side of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge on Tuesday night.

Kenneth Adams, 61, of Lewiston, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in that city, where he was listed in good condition Tuesday night. His dog, Freddy, was taken to the Animal Emergency Clinic of Mid-Maine, where it later died of injuries sustained in the crash.

Lt. Rick Coron of the Auburn Police Department said the single-vehicle crash was reported at about 7 p.m. Tuesday. As Adams was heading onto the bridge from the Auburn side of the Androscoggin River, he apparently lost control of his vehicle and it rolled several times before landing on the passenger side in a stand of pine trees.

Adams’ dog was ejected from the vehicle during the crash, Coron said. Jamie Watson of Lewiston came upon the crash and saw the dog lying in a snowbank. She took it to the clinic while rescue crews attended to Adams.

“The guy was very concerned about his dog,” said Lt. Douglas Ball of the Auburn Fire Department. “He was more concerned about that than he was about himself.”
