AUBURN — Alcohol apparently played a role in a fatal accident Saturday in which a 58-year-old local woman was killed.

Joanne Polvinen of 800 Broad St. died after her 2001 four-door Chevrolet crossed the centerline on Broad Street shortly after 10:30 p.m. and collided with a 2006 Volkswagen driven by Xiaoying S. Zhang, 28, of Auburn.

Police determined that the crash was alcohol-related after detecting that odor or other similar evidence. No test results are available yet, Sgt. James Robicheau said Monday.

Blood-alcohol levels of both drivers were tested in keeping with Maine law, which requires such tests in fatal accidents, police said.

The accident is under investigation. Accident reconstruction is ongoing.

Zhang was taken to the hospital Saturday night after complaining of head pain. She was treated and released., Robicheau said.

According to the police accident report, the air bag in Polvinen’s car deployed and she was partially ejected after the door opened during the crash.

The two cars were driving in opposite directions — Polvinen southbound and Zhang northbound — on a straight flat stretch of dry road when they hit head-on. The posted speed was 45 mph. There were no street lights.

Polvinen’s car crossed the centerline but wasn’t passing a vehicle, the accident report said. She died instantly, police said.

The two drivers were the only people in involved in the accident, the report said.
