No one was at the home of Lisa Barden and Allen Baston when the fire started, acting Strong Fire Chief Duayne Boyd said Monday. When firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed in flames that were shooting out the windows, he said. Firefighters were able to save a nearby shed.

About 25 firefighters from Strong, Phillips, New Vineyard, North New Portland and Farmington responded to the scene off Route 234. The fire was reported at 12:20 p.m.

“The fire was knocked down within 10 to 15 minutes,” Boyd said, and the rest of the time was spent on cleanup and making sure all burning areas were out.

Fire burned a hole down through the floor in the living room, he said. Firefighters removed the skirting to the mobile home to get some water in underneath it, he said.

“It looks like it started in the living room around the wood stove but we don’t know what caused it,” he said, though they have some idea but are waiting for official confirmation.

The home was insured, he said.

It was unknown early Monday evening where the couple was staying.
