This is in reference to the article “Obama rail package a mixed job picture” (Jan. 29).
What is Joan Lowy talking about? This country had the technology to put a man on the moon and she says we will have to import high-speed railroad trains from overseas. Many engineers from foreign countries have visited U.S. companies to learn how to develop a new project; we should be able to do the same thing. Once we get the know-how, we can produce these trains here in the U.S., putting our people in those jobs.
The big problem will be to make and keep this new passenger rail service affordable. Maybe we should take a look at how the Japanese control this. I am guessing it is not a greedy private sector that controls pricing.
Oh! Oh! Did I suggest a government-control option?
