BETHEL — At a meeting of the Oxford County Democrats on Sunday, attendees chose Roy Gedat to replace the outgoing county treasurer.

Cathy Newell, chairwoman of the Oxford County Democrats, said Gedat was the only person nominated for the position. If the nomination is approved by Gov. John Baldacci, Gedat will fill the remainder of the term of Mary Ann Prue, who is moving out of the area. Prue, who served as treasurer for 13 years, resigned effective Monday.

Prue’s term runs through December. Gedat said he has actively been running for the party’s nomination since January, and plans to run for re-election in November.

“If I am fortunate enough to serve the citizens of Oxford County as the county treasurer, I will do so in a nonpartisan and professional manner,” Gedat said. “I am truly excited about the prospect of working closely with the elected county officials, staff and interested citizens as part of a team.”

Gedat graduated from Hofstra University in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and journalism. Two years later, he graduated from the Boston University School of Social Work with a master’s degree in social work.

Gedat worked as an administrator in the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare for four years and director of home care services for Catholic Charities in Portland before moving to Norway in 1985. He served as executive director of the Child Health Center from that year until 2004.

Gedat was the executive director of the Maine Personal Assistance Services Association from 2005 to 2007 and national advocacy director for Direct Care Alliance Inc. He currently consults for the latter organization and is in the process of starting his own home-care service business in the Oxford Hills.
