SOUTH PARIS — Charles S. Melville has been named Veteran of the Month at the Maine Veterans’ Home.

Melville was born in Greenwood on Dec. 18, 1927. He grew up, along with his four brothers and one sister, in the towns of Bethel and Locke Mills. In August 1948, Melville enlisted in the Army and was placed with the 470 Bakery Company. He was first stationed in Petersburg, Va., and then spent time in Japan and Korea.

Melville became a sergeant first class and served for five years. Upon his discharge, he received the United Nations Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star.

After his service, he returned to Greenwood and worked as a wood worker at Ekco Products Company. He was a member of Greenwood’s Fire Department for seven years and has been a member of the Jackson Silver Post 68 for 55 years.

Melville came to the Maine Veterans’ Home in 2006 and resides on the B-Unit. He loves black coffee, peanut butter cups and football. The Dukes of Hazzard is his favorite television show, he reads the newspaper every day and he is very proud of his service in the Army.
