U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe declined an invitation from President Barack Obama to attend the health care summit. Apparently, the Republican Party didn’t want her to attend.

Thus, it appears she has chosen party loyalty over representation of her Maine constituents, and she has left the discussion in the hands of partisan ideologues from both political parties.

There are serious health care problems in Maine. Many people do not have adequate health care coverage. Those who do live in fear of losing their insurance. The problem stymies small businesses and handcuffs medical professionals.

Our congressional representatives are the only Maine citizens with guaranteed, top-quality health care.

I am embarrassed that my senator declined a request from my president and failed to jump at an opportunity to speak for Maine citizens. She could have used her considerable talents to be a mediating voice in this important discussion and move us toward meaningful reform.
