Back-to-back Olympic gold medals probably ushered Seth Wescott to the doorstep of athletic immortality, anyway.

But now the Farmington native has truly made it. He’s coming to a cupboard or a continental breakfast buffet near you.

Wescott, 2006 and 2010 winter games champion in snowboard cross, is one of three United States Olympians chosen to grace the unmistakable, orange front of a Wheaties cereal box.

General Mills announced Thursday that Wescott, skier Lindsey Vonn and snowboarder Shaun White each will be linked with the time-honored “breakfast of champions.”

“Having your own Wheaties box is something many athletes strive for. So today it is an incredible feeling to see my box and know it represents determination, hard work and focus in a sport that’s relatively new to the winter games,” Wescott said in a news release.

Wescott backed up his gold medal in the inaugural 2006 boardercross event with a come-from-behind victory in Vancouver.

“To earn two consecutive gold medals means so much, and the culmination of now having a Wheaties box is icing on the cake,” said Wescott.

The year-round Sugarloaf resident returned to Maine this week after the traditional post-Olympic publicity tour.

The Carrabassett Valley resort will host an official welcome home event Saturday for Wescott.

Wescott and White are the first athletes from their disciplines to appear on a Wheaties box.

Baseball legend Lou Gehrig was featured on the back of a Wheaties box in 1934. It wasn’t until 1958 that pole vaulter Bob Richards became the initial athlete to grace the main side.

Olympians have been featured frequently. Among those preceding the current wave of snow athletes on a Wheaties box were skaters Sarah Hughes and Kristi Yamaguchi, the 1980 men’s and 1998 women’s hockey teams, Apolo Ohno, Bruce Jenner and Mary Lou Retton.
