CANTON — Five people are running for two seats on the Board of Selectmen during elections Friday.

Polls will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 12 at the Town Office.

Selectmen Lisa Cummings and Brain Jordan are running, along with former Selectman Donald Hutchins III, Jeannette Ouellette and Shane Gallant.

Thomas Adley and Doleen Goodrow-Boyce are running for two vacancies on the Planning Board.

There are no candidates for the two vacancies on the Budget Committee.

The town meeting begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Town Hall. The proposed municipal budget is $492,786, or $3,507 more than last year. School and county assessments will not be known until later in the spring.

Town Administrative Assistant Kathy Hutchins said because the school and county fiscal years are July 1 to June 30, she backs the proposal to have the town’s the same. It now is Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.

Article 34 asks the town to authorize selectmen to sell a portion of land where the former town garage stood. It is on Whitney Brook near Route 140.

Voters will be asked to appropriate money monthly for the Maine State Housing Authority. The town must repay a $135,000 grant received to create a new town center called Village Ridge. Land was purchased and partially developed when the town decided not to go ahead with the project.
