STONEHAM — Voters approved items related to the town office at Saturday’s annual town meeting, but opted not to look into getting a new town office or community room.
The town office and community room are located in the fire station on Butters Hill Road. Attendees turned down an article to see if the town would gather information and estimates for a new town office and/or community room.
“They didn’t see any need for it,” said Selectman Neal Littlefield.
Residents approved an article to look into purchasing a one-acre lot next to the current town office. Littlefield said the parcel is for sale, and that residents felt it was an appropriate time to look into the purchase if the land is needed in the future. The money for the purchase would come from the building fund.
Voters also approved using money from the building fund to remodel and upgrade the town office and community room, as well as the possibility of appropriating $1,000 from the fund and authorizing selectmen to enter into a multi-year agreement as part of the requirements for Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block grants.
Littlefield said the town officials up for re-election were returned to office. Rod Rovzar, who took over the remainder of selectman John Collins’ term, was chosen for a three-year term. Town Clerk Midge Silvio was also re-elected for another three years. Other officers include Ed Spooner, who was elected to a three-year term on the SAD 72 school board, and Gus Fillebrown, who was chosen for a three-year term as assistant fire chief.
Voters also approved the joint recommendations made by selectmen and Budget Committee for appropriations. These included $40,000 for snow removal, $35,000 for highways and bridges, $12,000 for the fire department, and $4,500 for the building fund.
Residents approved a measure to see if they favored creating a plan to change the town’s fiscal year from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 to a period running from July 1 to June 30.
Littlefield estimated that about 59 people attended the meeting and that it lasted about three hours.
