AVON — Avon voters will discuss a wind-power moratorium when they meet for their annual town meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Avon Town Hall.

To provide time to draft an ordinance for wind power, selectmen are looking for an 180-day moratorium, said First Selectman Bob Ellis.

“We’re not against wind power but we’re not prepared for a massive effort to put up towers,” he said. “We’ll see if the folks are interested and what voters want.”

If they provide the 180-days to craft the ordinance, the final draft will be presented to voters for their approval, he said.

The town will review a budget of less than $170,000, one that is less than last year’s $201,000, he said.

“We’ve worked hard to keep it down, cut costs and gone over everything with a fine tooth comb,” he said.

Nominations for town officers will be taken and voted on during the meeting. A three-year term for the third selectman seat and a school board director seat are up for election along with the yearly treasurer, clerk, road commissioner and moderator positions, he said.

Not knowing how cuts for the school district and lower revenues from revenue sharing and homestead rebates will affect taxpayers, the town is trying to keep up with roads and be cautious about taxes, he said.

Town books are available at the town office prior to Saturday’s meeting.
