LEWISTON — Trevor Fleurent grew up with hockey in his blood.

His father won a state championship with Biddeford in 1977, the first year Class B was introduced. His older brother Tyler was a two-time state champion in 2007 and 2008, and he had younger brother Brady along for the ride as the Tigers won again in 2010.

Now, in addition to all of the team hardware, Fleurent, who’s ambitions include junior hockey next season, has also earned the state’s top individual hockey honor.

The Class A Coaches’ Association on Sunday awarded Fleurent the Travis Roy Award, given annually to the top Class A senior hockey player in Maine.

“I was very fortunate, growing up, to be surrounded by great hockey players,” Fleurent told a captive audience at the Ramada Inn. He went on to name several of the top players from this year’s team, and others of year’s past at Biddeford. “I couldn’t have done it without such a great supporting cast.”

Fleurent was one of four finalists for the award, along with forward Mat Gordon of Edward Little, defenseman Nick George of Bangor and goaltender Rick Hebb of Thornton Academy.

Fleurent led the state with 51 points in the regular season, was the Tigers’ captain and led the squad to a third state title in four seasons. As a varsity player, he never missed a game and accumulated just six penalty minutes this season.

Gordon’s speech drew attention to similarities between the senior sniper and the award’s namesake, Travis Roy.

Last year, Gordon was stricken with Guillain-Barre syndrome, causing him to lose feeling in his limbs. He was hospitalized for a week and is still on the road to recovering full functionality in all of his muscles.

“The difference between Travis and I is that my paralysis was 100 percent curable,” Gordon said. “The horror of not being able to use my limbs faded, but it left me with a deep understanding of what Travis’ life must be like.”

“The past four years, Mat Gordon has been the heart and soul of our hockey team,” EL coach Craig Latuscha said. “He has been through a lot, and for him to overcome that and have the kind of year he had, that was just amazing.”

In addition to the Travis Roy Award, the coaches’ association also handed out all-state hardware, as well as awards for coaches of the year and sportsmanship awards.

Lewiston coach Jamie Belleau received the coach of the year award in Eastern Class A, and the Blue Devils racked up the fewest penalty minutes in the state en route to earning the Eastern Class A sportsmanship award.

Area players named to the all-state first team, in addition to Gordon, included Sam Cloutier, Cody Dussault, Cam Poussard, Nick Mathon and Ben Wigant of Lewiston, Kolby Arnold of Gray-New Gloucester/Poland and Alex Parker of St. Dom’s. The second team included Nate Bergeron, Donne Larrivee, Will Desmarais and Cam Brown of St. Dom’s, Ryan Lemelin and Scott Ouellette of Lewiston and Rich Belanger of Edward Little.

Athletes earning honorable mention from the tri-county area included Cody Russell of Edward Little, Joey Fournier of Lewiston, Erik Ogren of MHW, Dakota Keene of St. Dom’s and Sam Mayer of Gray-New Gloucester/Poland.

Gordon added an all-academic award to his portfolio, as well, joining Mathon, Arnold, Connor Lacasse of MHW and Josh Charest of St. Dom’s on that list.
