BANGOR, Maine (AP) — A Maine man has pleaded not guilty to charges he killed a Newport couple last fall in what police have described as a botched robbery.

The Bangor Daily News says 31-year-old Nathaneal Nightingale of Burlington entered not guilty pleas on Wednesday to two counts of intentional or knowing murder in the shooting deaths of Michael Miller Sr. and his wife Valerie on Nov. 28 in their Webster Plantation home.

Nightingale was a member of the Maine Army National Guard.

The Millers were found dead on the kitchen floor of their mobile home. Nightingale was arrested about two weeks later.

Nightingale is being held without bail.
