LEWISTON — The United Valley American Red Cross is recruiting and training volunteers in an effort to build capacity for local and national disaster response. Red Cross volunteers lend a helping hand in their community by assisting victims of floods, tornadoes and other disasters, including families forced from their homes by fire.

The United Valley will host Fulfilling Our Mission, a volunteer training session, from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, at 1180 Lisbon St. The free session is open to people who want to get trained in order to respond to local disasters, with the potential to respond nationally.

“If you are a person who has interest in helping your community prepare, respond to and recover from disasters, than you are needed by the Red Cross. Right now. The United Valley responds to approximately 125 disasters a year,” said Eric Lynes, emergency services director.

All disaster volunteers must take this introductory course in order to be a Red Cross disaster relief volunteer. To sign up for the free training, call 795-4004, ext. 303.
