WILTON — The sixth annual Pine Tree State Sportsman Show normally draws thousands over the three day event to the Western Maine Expo, formerly Nichols Expo, on Weld Road.

Organizer Vic Morin, whose Northwoods Sporting Journal and television show host the event, said it draws over 175 vendors from all over New England and Canada.

The show runs from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Every year Morin visits shows around New England, bringing new exhibits and seminars to Wilton.

One new 40-foot display this year features a cast-iron Griswold stove collection including a completely restored wood stove from Rhode Island. The exhibitors offer a buy, swap, sell deal with show visitors able to bring their own cast iron pieces in to be appraised.

The Maine Antler Skull Trophy Club will measure antlers brought in by local hunters in an attempt to find the biggest antlers in Maine, an annual contest, he said.

A jon boat called a Beavertail that can travel in 3 inches of water and over logs will be on display.

A cowboy club donning complete cowboy outfits and six shooters that shoot wax bullets will, for a small fee, allow show attendees to see how fast they can draw and shoot.

Along with a variety of products on display and hunting trips around New England and Canada for sale, there will be exhibits manned by taxidermists, moose callers, dog-obedience people, game wardens, and dealers in ATVs, snowmobiles, hunting and fishing gear and clothing.

Over 30 seminars are planned throughout the weekend including one by a legendary Maine trapper, 80-year-old Oscar Cronk from Wiscassett, who will be there on Friday and Sunday. Others planned include deer calling with reed calls, use of scents, and primitive outdoor skills.

Items of interest to women and children are also included. Children’s games, animals, and a children’s archery range highlight their activities. There will also be jewelry, crafts and soap vendors intermingled among the booths. An Irish folksong singer will entertain throughout the weekend, Morin said.

This year, children under 12 will be admitted free. Other tickets are $8.

Other upcoming shows at the Western Maine Expo is the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Business Expo, formerly called the Home and Leisure Show, will be held on April 10.
