PARIS — Oxford Hills Distributive Education Classes of America students participated in the DECA state conference on March 4 and 5 at the Eastland Park Hotel in Portland.

The keynote speaker at opening ceremonies was Steve Wallace, president and executive director of the Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber of Commerce, who spoke to students about his meaning of “Live, Learn, Lead,” this year’s national DECA theme. At closing ceremonies, Meg Harvey, from the Maine Department of Education, shared her meaning of the theme in an address to students.

Outgoing officers Krista Hakala and Kayla Turner oversaw most of the activities of the event. Eight members qualified to attend the International Career Development Conference to be held from April 23 to 28 in Louisville, Ky.

Felicia Record and Mikenzi Merrill campaigned for positions as officers on the State DECA Action Team for the 2010-11 school year and were elected. Krista Hakala won Outstanding DECA Student for the State of Maine.

Felicia Record and Mikenzi Merrill will attend the State Officer Leadership Development Academy and Sarah Colby will attend the Leadership Academy. Certificates of Excellence for outstanding scores in one or more of their events were awarded to every student who competed. All students attending won awards at the conference.

Krista Hakala, Kendra Davis and Meagan McDougal, Learn and Earn Written Event, first.

Trisha Mitchell, Retail Merchandising, second, exam; second, role play one; third, role play two; and second, overall. Mitchell also won a $1,500 scholarship from Southern New Hampshire University and a $750 scholarship from Johnson and Wales University.

Marisa Hanning, Apparel and Accessories, third, role play two.

Mikenzi Merrill, Food Marketing, second, exam; first, role play one; first, role play two and overall.

Felicia Record and Ryan Stuart, Buying and Merchandising, third, case study.

Alisha Drake, Hotel and Lodging, third, role play one; first, role play two; third, overall. She also won a $1,000 scholarship from SNHU.

Senica Roussel, Sports and Entertainment, second, exam; second, role play one; third, role play two and overall. She also won a $1,000 scholarship from SNHU.

Zack Kimball and Nick Record, Travel and Tourism, second, case study; third, overall. They each won $500 scholarships from Johnson and Wales and $1,000 scholarships from SNHU.
