RUMFORD — Five local people were arrested Wednesday in connection with a two-day shopping spree that netted nearly $3,500 worth of electronics, clothing and food on a stolen credit card.

Rumford Police Department Sgt. Tracey Higley said the card was stolen from a Strathglass Park resident Monday. He said some property from the spree on Tuesday and Wednesday has been recovered.

Charged are:

• Zachery Lee Giberson, 19, of Lochness Road in Rumford, on a charge of felony theft and violation of bail conditions. He remains at the Oxford County Jail in Paris.

• Derick Harnden, 19, Rumford, receiving stolen property. He was released on $500 unsecured bail.

• Jacob Clark, 18, Rumford, receiving stolen property. He was released from the Rumford Police Department on $600 unsecured bail.

• A 16-year-old Dixfield girl, receiving stolen property. She was released to her parents.

• Ryan Harnden, 27, Rumford, operating without a license. He was released on personal recognizance bail.

Higley said he expects at least one or two more arrests in connection with the stolen goods.

Higley said the stolen credit card was used at the Mexico Walmart, Carlisle’s on Congress Street in Rumford, and Mountain Valley Variety in Rumford, as well as to withdraw cash from multiple ATMs.

The investigation began Tuesday when Sgt. David Bean responded to a report of a stolen credit card. Higley viewed security tapes from the stores and identified one of the suspects. Officers Dennis Ryder, Eric Richard and Donald Miller, along with Capt. Dan Garbarini also assisted with the investigation.

At least three or four additional summonses were issued to other people on unrelated drug and motor vehicle violations during the probe.

He said the businesses were a significant help in providing information that led to the arrests.

Higley advised credit cardholders to keep their PIN, or personal identification number, separate from the card and don’t share that number unless there is an emergency.
