With the request that he be locked up for the night, a Lewiston man went to the Lewiston police station late yesterday afternoon. The man said that he had a good job out of town for which he was going to leave in the morning, but that he had a bunch of friends down in the lower end of the city whom he was afraid would get him intoxicated if he was around the street during the evening. He was accordingly given a place to sleep and will be let out this morning in time to get his train.

50 years ago, 1960

Deputy Sheriff Gerard St. Pierre of 21 Beacon St., has resigned his position with the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department and will devote his time to a grocery store he has purchased at Randall Road and Sabattus Street. St. Pierre, with the ASD for two years, will complete his law enforcement duties Friday. Sheriff Robert W. Bonenfant has not yet named a replacement.

With warm spring weather about to polish off what’s left of the snow in the woods, state and local sheriffs are far from worried about the usual spring flooding.

Instead, they are afraid some area wells may begin to dry up soon because the fall and winter were so dry.

Only 5.52 inches of precipitation — the water content of rain or snow — has fallen so far in 1985 in Maine, according to the National Weather Service in Portland. Ten inches is normal for this time of year, said Tony Lacroix, a weather specialist with the weather agency.
