MOUNT VERNON, Maine (AP) — Two fishermen who fell from their canoe into the frigid water of a pond in Maine and swam to a nearby island have been rescued.

The Maine Warden Service says Trevor Holt and David Croteau were in Parker Pond in Mount Vernon on Saturday afternoon. It says they had finished reeling in their lines and were headed to a boat launch when their 16-foot canoe tipped over.

A woman at a camp heard the men screaming and called state police while they swam about 100 yards to the island.

The Warden Service says two kayakers gave the men dry clothes and built a fire. The men were rescued by a Mount Vernon Fire and Rescue boat.

The men are both 29 and from Farmington. They experienced mild hypothermia but didn’t want to be taken to a hospital.
