David P. MacDonald

1934 – 2010

RUMFORD — David P. MacDonald, 75, of Knox Street, Rumford, died Tuesday, April 6, after a brief illness.

He was born in Rumford, July 26, 1934, the only child of David and Mary (Pippert) MacDonald. He graduated from Stephens High School, Class of 1953, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1956, stationed at Parris Island, S.C. He qualified as an expert rifleman prior to graduating from recruit training and was then selected as coach for the purpose of training other recruits. He was also sent to Annapolis to teach marksmanship to the midshipmen.

He married Dolores Barre on Oct 26, 1957. Together they celebrated 42 years of marriage and raised three daughters. These happy years would not have taken place had it not been for a special brother-in-law, Albert (Butch) Barre, who donated a kidney in 1966 to David’s dear wife, who passed away on May 27, 2000.

He was employed at Boise Cascade for 42 years, retiring in 1996. He was a wonderful father, who enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was a devout Catholic, who stood fast to the traditions of his faith. He had a great knowledge of history especially regarding his home town of Rumford and had an interest in his ancestral heritage; learning to play the bagpipes in his late teens.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. (Robert) Corinne Sheahan of Monroe, Conn., Mrs. (David) Claire Rieger of Huntington, W.Va., and Karen MacDonald of Rumford; two grandchildren, Abby Whalen and Christopher Childs of Schuylkill, Pa.; one great-grandson, Quinten Childs; and two special cousins, Mrs. (Claude) Ann Bonang of Brunswick and Mary MacDonald of P.E.I., Canada.

The family of David would like to express their gratitude to their friends and relatives for the many kindnesses they have shown throughout the years, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Barre of Rumford, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Child of Dixfield, Mr. and Mrs. Norman (Champ) Barre of Rumford, Emile Barre of Rumford and Maurice Galarneau of Auburn.

The family would also like to thank the many doctors, nurses and health professionals from Rumford to Lewiston, who have cared for David throughout the years. Their kindness and consideration will not be forgotten.
