JAY — Commander John Judd of the Frank L. Mitchell Post 3335 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars has announced that a National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day program will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, April 9.
Members of the post and the ladies’ and men’s auxiliaries will gather at the POW-MIA Remembrance Bridge Monument at the corner of Route 4 and Riley Road. The public is invited.
April 9 is the day set aside each year by Presidential Proclamation for National Former POW Recognition Day. Tribute is paid to the patriots of the United States military who endured captivity because of war.
The date commemorates the date during World War II in 1942 when the largest number of Americans ever taken at one time were captured in the Conquest of Bataan. Thousand of the prisoners died in captivity due to the infamous Bataan Death March and other inhumane treatment at the hands of the enemy.
POW Chairman George Wyman is requesting that anyone knowing of a former POW in the area to contact him at 645-5352. Former POWs and their families are invited to attend to be recognized at the program.
