PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Almost two dozen Maine food businesses are facing the loss of some their products because of an ammonia leak at a commercial freezer.
The state of Maine says millions of pounds of food at the Americold Logistics facility in Portland has been contaminated and must be destroyed or proven to be safe.
The Portland Press Herald says 29 companies had food in the 150,000-square-foot facility at the time of the Jan. 22 leak. Since then the Maine Department of Agriculture has prevented the businesses from removing their products without permission.
Velma Orcutt of Sunrise County Wild Maine Blueberry says the leak has been devastating. She says the company had about a year’s worth of frozen blueberries in the freezer, worth about $240,000.
