WOODSTOCK — Drivers of a commercial van and a car were taken to hospitals early Friday evening after police say they collided on Route 26 at the intersection with Curtis Hill Road during a rain storm.

Oxford County Sheriff’s Cpl. Justin Brown said both victims were taken by PACE ambulance to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

Neither driver was believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries, Brown said.

Brown said that based on evidence and debris at the scene, 79-year-old David Lyon, of Woodstock, the driver of the 2005 Mitsubishi station wagon was headed south while Kevin Creney, 45, of Waterford, was driving north in a 2007 Chevy van owned by MRE Inc. of South Portland.

“It appears like the Mitsubishi crossed the centerline and the two collided,” Brown said. “There are unknown contributing factors at this time, like whether this was medical related or driver inattention or weather related.”

The accident happened at 6:18 p.m. at Curtis Hill Road and just after the Mitsubishi driver had descended a small hill around a curve. The car came to rest partially over the centerline facing south, while the van stopped just off the north-bound lane.

“Airbag deployment saved their lives,” Woodstock fire Chief Geff Inman said on scene of both drivers.

Woodstock firefighters initially detoured traffic around the scene after police closed Route 26, then opened the south-bound lane to traffic, while directing north-bound traffic onto Curtis Hill Road.

At 7:42 p.m., Lyon was taken from the Norway hospital by PACE to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where he was being treated late Friday night.
