LEWISTON — When Tim Brodsky saw the top of the net, he knew he could put it there.

So the Edward Little attacker wound up and fired a blistering shot that landed just where he wanted it to. He added another early in the fourth quarter Tuesday and gave the Red Eddies the cushion it needed in a 6-4 boys’ lacrosse win over Lewiston.

“It’s a nice feeling to get that first one out of the way, especially with the cross-town rivals,” said Brodsky, who had three goals for EL. “It’s a big emotional win. We had guys get injured. We had to play through it, and we had a good team effort.”

EL led the entire game, but watched the Blue Devils rally in the third quarter. Goals by Curtis Robinson and Elliott Chicoine turned a 4-1 lead into a 4-3 nail-biter. Lewiston was threatening most of the third, but it was Brodsky that turned the tide. He scored twice in the opening minutes of the fourth to thwart the Blue Devils’ rally.

“That was a really big goal,” said Brodsky. “We needed some emotion back. We needed some momentum. The third quarter, we were down a little bit. We all had a little bit of energy. We got in the huddle and knew that this was the time, and we had to do it. We got the team fired up and the wheels spinning again.”

Brodsky made something happen with 11:35 left in the quarter when he fired a shot to the top of the net.

“I saw enough room right at the top of the goal,” he said. “There was no stick right in front of me. I wound up and fired and hit the corner I wanted.”

Lewiston’s rally in the third had been hampered by two late penalties, one of which led to a man advantage that Brodsky scored the goal on. With 9:23 left in the game, Brodsky maneuvered from behind the net to score and make it 6-3. He says he learned the move by watching college lacrosse players do the same thing.

Lewiston got one goal back when Robinson scored his second of the game with 6:06 left, but the Blue Devils couldn’t get closer. Despite maintaining possession for much of the last three-plus minutes, Lewiston couldn’t beat goalie Henry Moniz. Lewiston finished with a 27-23 advantage in shots.

“We had some great chances,” said Lewiston coach Bill Bodwell. “We had our guy one-on-one with the goalie a couple of times. Unfortunately, it didn’t go in.”

The best chance came with Seth Mason alone in front, but Moniz knocked the ball away. In the final minutes, the defense did a solid job keeping Lewiston to the outside. When anyone made a rush toward the middle, they were often swarmed by defenders.

“We knew we just had to hold them off and hold out for the last three minutes,” said Brodsky. “We had a great effort from our goalie. He kept us in it the whole time. The defense played strong the entire time.”

EL struck early with two Tom Lynch goals in the first quarter. Lewiston got off to a slow start and got one from Ryan Lemelin early in the second, but Brodsky and Travis Landry scored late in the half to build a 4-1 lead.

“The first half, it took us awhile to adjust to the speed of a real game,” said Bodwell. “I thought we started to calm down a little on offense in the third. We started to move the ball a little bit better. We started to create some opportunities, and we had nice movement off the ball. We did start to play better.”

Lewiston’s surge led to a Robinson goal early in the third. Chicoine added his in transition with 5:01 left. Down 4-3, Lewiston had some momentum and EL was forced to counter.

“They picked it up but so did we toward the end,” said Moniz, who finished with 13 saves. “We kind of had to catch up in the third.”

Jesse Leeman also had 13 saves in net for Lewiston.

The two late penalties halted Lewiston’s momentum, and Brodsky’s early goals in the fourth set the table for a strong final quarter for the Red Eddies, who split with Lewiston in the regular season last year but lost to the Blue Devils in the playoffs.

“We had a bunch of injuries,” said Moniz. “A couple kids couldn’t play anymore. We all pulled it together. We had kids playing long pole that don’t normally play long pole. We kind of gelled together.”
