WILTON — The driver of a second vehicle who may have witnessed a fatal crash on Route 4 Saturday night has been identified, according to Wilton Police Chief Dennis Brown, who did not give any more information while police continued their investigation Tuesday.

The department asked for help from the public over the weekend to track down the driver or passengers in the second vehicle, a red sedan, that was also eastbound on Route 4 at the time of the crash.

The one-vehicle crash at the intersection of Routes 2 and 4 claimed the life of Jeffrey Burgess, 25, of Dixfield. Burgess and two other men, Zachary Metivier, 25, and Adam Turner, 27, were eastbound on Route 4 in a Ford F-250 pickup when the truck ran off the road, rolled over an embankment and landed among trees.

Metivier was not hurt, but Turner was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington where he was treated and later released.

The number of accidents along Route 2 in Wilton continues to concern the Police Department, Brown said. Collecting data for a grant, the department has covered well over 200 wrecks since August 2007. Five deaths have resulted from Route 2 accidents in about the last year.

Although the state Department of Transportation has surveyed the road and is considering another turn lane at the Route 156 intersection, it also wants to keep a constant speed along the stretch of highway, he said. The intersection has been the scene of several accidents but there have also been many along the whole stretch of Route 2 and 4 through Wilton.
