AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — John Richardson, one of five Democratic candidates for Maine governor, has called a news conference after receiving notice he didn’t qualify for Clean Election Act funding.

Richardson will meet with the press Monday in Brunswick. He sought public campaign funding, but his eligibility was in question.

Campaign spokeswoman Monica Castellanos says Richardson received notice that he did not qualify.

A political blog, Pine Tree Politics, on Sunday quoted a source close to Richardson who said the candidate planned to announce he would drop out of the race.

Richardson served in the Maine House of Representatives, finishing as speaker. In 2007, he was named commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development.
