LEWISTON — Musical boundaries will disappear when master guitarist and songsmith Denny Breau takes to the stage on Wednesday, May 12, at L/A Arts’ new DownStage venue. Joining him onstage for a couple of songs will be his mother, RCA recording artist Betty Cody.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Breau was born to the guitar. His parents, Hal Lone Pine and Cody, were both popular country performers and RCA recording artists beginning in the 1940s. His older brother, the late Lenny Breau, is considered a jazz guitar giant.

Breau’s rhythmically flawless and clear style enable him to do amazing things with a six-string guitar. He first draws in an audience with a finely arranged melody and then slides effortlessly into scorching finger work.

The consummate picker and evocative singer-songwriter mixes genres — folk, Delta blues, country and jazz — with ease.

Breau won Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Instrumentalist of the Year so many times from the Maine Country Music Association that he was eventually retired from the running with an All-time Great award.

In conversations with concertgoers after a show, Breau, who has a passion for teaching, has been known to share how he performs certain techniques. This is especially true when he demonstrates the guitar style of Chet Atkins, who was a family friend and major influence.
