MEXICO — Police issued their first warnings of the spring/summer season Saturday to two residents who did not have a town permit to operate a yard sale.

The town ordinance governing yard or garage sales went into effect a couple of years ago. Under its requirements, residents must apply for such a sale at the town office. The intent is to eliminate ongoing yard sales.

Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said the permit cost is minimal; however, violators can be fined up to $100. He said warnings will be issued at first. Repeat violators will be summoned.

“We’ve given warnings in the past,” he said.

The Police Department also held a successful all-terrain-vehicle safety class last weekend in Roxbury. Fifty-two people, some from as far away as Scarborough, attended the event, which is the most who have ever participated, Chief James Theriault said. Successful completion of such a course is required for all people under age 16.

Mexico police officers, the Roxbury ATV Club and the Mexico Police Explorers assisted with the class.

Because of the need for ATV education, another class will be held in June.

Those interested should contact the Mexico Police Department at 364-5686.
