PERU — Selectmen agreed Monday night to present a plan to Western Foothills Regional School Unit 10 for leasing the former Peru Elementary School for alternative education students.

Board Vice Chairwoman Laurieann Milligan said the offer calls for a $5,000 lease payment annually, as well as payment of all operating costs, including heat and utilities.

Regular maintenance costs of the building would be split by the town and the school district. Fire and liability insurance would be held by both the town and the school district, as well.

RSU 10 Superintendent Tom Ward said use of the former Peru school is one of three options that he will present to the board during the May 3 meeting.

He said he met with the alternative education team Wednesday morning to discuss ways that all alternative education students from the three high schools may be served.

Besides the use of the former Peru school, he said he will present an option that calls for establishing an alternative education school at Mountain Valley High School in Rumford. The third option calls for sending Buckfield High School alternative students to the alternative education program offered at Dirigo High School while retaining a separate alternative program at MVHS.

Right now, MVHS and DHS offer separate alternative programs, while Buckfield does not offer that service.

In other matters at the selectmen’s meeting, the board decided to inventory all properties that appear to have a quantity of junk and trash stored on them. The town has been receiving complaints about such properties, Milligan said.

She said the town uses the state junkyard ordinance which calls for property owners to maintain the appearance of their land.

Once the assessment of similar properties has been completed, the board then will decide its next step.

Also on Monday, the board accepted the resignation of Planning Board member Ron Ashworth. An advertisement will be placed in local newspapers seeking those who may be interested in serving.
