FARMINGTON — Wilfred Noyes, 81, of Wilton died Thursday, May 7, at the Sandy River Center for Healthcare.

He was born at the family homestead in Wilton, Oct. 25, 1928, the only child of Reno P. and Mattie (Fletcher) Knowles and moved to Orchard Drive in May 1939. He received his education in Wilton schools and graduated from Wilton Academy in 1946. He worked at Rand’s sawmill and on the family farm as well as Frary Wood Turning. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and was there when the armistice was signed.

After his military service, he worked at IP at both the Otis Mill and the Androscoggin Mill, where he retired in June 1987 after 30 years. In 1962, he married Joanne Adams, and she died in 1963. In 1971, he married Lillian Cole Mills in Wilton and they made their home in Wilton. In later years, they wintered in Zephyrhills, Fla., and later wintered with their daughter in Pitkin, La.

He was a member of Wilson Grange for more than 50 years, as well as Pomona and Excelsior Grange, and always looked forward to growing fruits and vegetables for the Grange booth at Farmington Fair. He was a member of Williamson Lodge IOOF, where he served in various offices. He and his wife were longtime faithful members of the Wilton United Methodist Church. He enjoyed mountain climbing and photography in his younger years.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lillian of Louisana; a son, Celand Richard Noyes of Wilton; a daughter, Elaine Moore and her husband, Webster, of Pitkin, La.; a granddaughter, Tammie of Norway; a great-granddaughter, Mary-Caitlin of Norway; and cousins, Margaret Mahnke of Colebrook, N.H., and Caroline Amick of Arizona.
