TURNER —Police responding to an early-morning 911 call found 38-year-old Jane Tetreault shot dead at her East Hebron Road home Saturday.

Tetreault’s husband, Brian Nichols, 45, was immediately questioned, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said.

“He was taken into custody in his vehicle a short distance from his house,” McCausland said.

Nichols was charged with one count of Class A murder later in the day and was being held at the Androscoggin County Jail without bail, according to an official there.

The 911 call came in around 3:30 a.m. Androscoggin County sheriff’s deputies found Tetreault’s body, McCausland said in a press release. One of the couple’s sons, a 17-year-old, was home at the time.

On Saturday afternoon, a white State Police Criminal Investigation Division van sat in the driveway at 225 East Hebron Road with the engine running. Police wearing blue rubber gloves made trips in and out of the house and photographed the exterior. At about 3:15 p.m., three men loaded a stretcher with what appeared to be a body into the back of a black Chevy Suburban.

The brown ranch with a neat, landscaped yard and a swing set out back is located in a rural area. Neighbors said they didn’t know the family well.

Tetreault and Nichols both worked at the Lewiston franchise of Service Master cleaners, McCausland said. A man identifying himself as Tetreault’s father answered the phone at the business late Saturday afternoon and said he was there with investigators.

The couple married in 2003 with sons Travis and Tyson as ring bearers, according to a wedding announcement in the Sun Journal archives. Tetreault was a Lewiston High School graduate in the Class of 1990.

Police planned to continue their investigation into Sunday when an autopsy was also scheduled.
