Field of memories

Edward Little’s game Friday was held at Sweetser Field at Auburn Suburban and rekindled some wonderful days gone by for the Red Eddies.

“This brings back really good memories of my middle school team,” said second baseman Melissa Paione. “We were undefeated my seventh grade year. So we were really pumped to play on this field again. We miss it.”

EL beat Lewiston 13-1. It is typically the only game the Red Eddies play on that field. It was part of a softball-baseball doubleheader Friday evening. Most of the EL were part of that unbeaten team in middle school.

“It was a fun game,” said Paione. “I love this field. I love the grass infield and it brings back really good memories.”

Still on top

The Western C champions haven’t missed a beat this season. After losing two starters, the Telstar Rebels remain atop the Western C standings with a perfect 8-0 mark.

Pitcher Kayla Merril has been a force as the full-time starter. In her first seven outings, she had six shutouts and had a perfect game. She’s only allowed four runs total, only two earned. She struck out 61 and walked just five as Telstar has outscored its foes 63-4 thus far.

Merrill isn’t the only one putting up impressive numbers. The Rebels have six hitters batting over .400. Merrill leads the team with a .545 average while her sister Lyndsay is hitting .417 in the lead off spot. Veteran starters Nicena Walker (.454), Sam Largess (.444), Hannah Morin (.400) and TJ Cowin (.400) are also hitting well. Cowin has 10 hits this season and eight of them are extra bases.

Coming back to help

It’s tough to devote as much time as necessary to all aspects of a sport as a solo head coach. If the offense needs work, it’s tough to spend enough time with your goalie, and vice versa.

Lewiston girls’ lacrosse coach Christy Gardner got a little bit of help this week when a few players returned to watch after spending a year at college. One of those players returning was goalie Stephanie Belanger.

“We have her to help our goalie (Emily Craig) out a bit,” Gardner said. “While I’m working somewhere else, Emily can still get the attention she needs.”

It showed in the Devils’ first game action since the reinforcements arrived. After a pair of games in which Craig made just 13 combined saves, she turned in a 22-save performance Saturday against South Portland.

Holding onto the ‘0s’

Stearns, Central Aroostook, Bangor, Richmond and Cape Elizabeth are the last five remaining unbeaten baseball teams in Maine, according to the latest Heal Points posted at www.mpa.cc.

Eight softball teams remain perfect in the loss column, too, including Bangor, Calais, LCM/MSSM, Richmond, Telstar, Georges Valley, Fryeburg and Scarborough.
