DIXFIELD — The Dixfield Police Department will begin a series of safety belt usage patrol details next Monday thanks to a recent grant.

Law enforcement officers can now stop drivers for not wearing the safety device. In the past, officers could not stop a motorist solely for not wearing a seat belt, but instead had to stop someone for another motor vehicle violation.

Chief Richard Pickett said anyone not wearing a set belt will be subject to a fine.

Each police detail will be for four hours. The extra time police officers serve will be covered by the state grant.

The Dixfield Police Department also has use of a device that measures speed as motorists drive through town. It is on loan from a state agency for a couple of weeks.
