AUBURN — Funeral services for Spc. Barry D. Smith were held Monday at The Fortin Group Funeral Home. The Army Chaplain Valmore Vigue officiated and recited committal prayers at Gracelawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Gov. John Baldacci presented his parents with special medals and citations earned by Spc. Smith. At the cemetery, Gen. John W. Libby presented his parents with both state of Maine flags and U.S. flags. The Maine Patriot Riders, Auburn and Lewiston Police all provided escort service to the cemetery. The Maine Army Honor Guard stood at attention during the entire wake and also acted as special Military pallbearers to honor him for his service to his country. Besides Governor Baldacci and General Libby and his wife Cindy, the funeral service and committal were attended by several hundred relatives, friends and military personnel. The committal concluded with The playing of “taps,” 21 gun salute and the folding of the American flag and presentation of the flags to his parents. Pallbearers were Jordan Casey, Shane Smith, Philip Smith, Brian Smith, Eric Larrivee, Garrett Grant and Kyle Kirk. Military casket bearers were SSG. Vater, SSG. McBean, SSG. Mathews, Sgt. Carver, Sgt. Buckley, Spc. Szacy and Spc. Guimond.
