FREEPORT — RSU 5 (Durham, Freeport and Pownal) Board of Directors voted to eliminate the Pownal Middle School program over two years and allow students to chose between two other middle schools.

For the 2010-11 school year, Pownal sixth-graders will be given the choice of attending three middle schools: Durham, Freeport or Pownal.

At the same time seventh and eighth grade will be eliminated at Pownal as of September 2010 and all seventh- and eighth-graders will be given the choice of attending Freeport or Durham.

Transportation will be provided “in the most economical manor” up to $5,000.

For the 2011-12 school year and beyond Pownal Elementary School will house grades K-5 only, and all Pownal students in grades six, seven and eight will have the choice of attending Durham or Freeport middle schools .

There are currently 11 students enrolled in grade six and 13 in grade seven at Pownal; all of whom will have to chose between attending Durham or Freeport schools beginning in September.

According to Pownal School Principal Dianna Mosher, those affected by the elimination of the middle school programs are still looking into both options and have made no final decisions on which school they will attend.
