Society speaker

WOODSTOCK — Cubby Swan recently spoke to the Woodstock Historical Society on Leon Ray Livingston, also known as “Hobo A No. 1.” He wrote 12 books about his life and tried to persuade the young not to adopt a hobo’s life.

Because his child got polio, he used some book revenues for polio victims. He went all over the world and met presidents Taft and Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank and Jack London. He spoke four languages.

Bethel was one Livingston’s favorite stops. Swan has a shingle with Livingston’s mark on it and copies of all his books.
