Students at Hartford Sumner Elementary School recently adopted the wolf as their mascot. The students were introduced to Maine wolf facts by Registered Maine Guide Ron Fournier, right, on May 12. Fournier is assistant program director for Bryant Pond 4-H Clubs. He talked about the history of grey wolves in Maine and their current status; the similarities and differences of wolves, foxes and coyotes; and he brought pelts and skulls for the students to examine. Shirley Twitchell, left, director of the Nezinscot Valley After School Program, said introducing the wolf mascot to the students is the first step in tying in coyotes, wolf and red fox facts to their new Positive Behavior Intervention and Support plan. Cindy Austin, parent coordinator of the PBIS program, gave a slide presentation to explain the program. Students will earn points throughout the year toward non-monetary things such as special privileges, while learning about Maine’s native wildlife in the process.
