WOODSTOCK — A 23-year-old man remained at the Oxford County Jail on Monday after his early-morning arrest on charges of threatening his cousin and a police officer.

Shane Eric Smith of Perkins Valley Road in Woodstock was initially charged with aggravated marijuana cultivation, obstructing government administration, terrorizing with a firearm, terrorizing, and disorderly conduct. The District Attorney’s Office declined to press the terrorizing with a firearm count.

According to a report by Trooper Dan Hanson of the Maine State Police, 27-year-old Michael Rawlings called police to say that Smith, his cousin and neighbor had threatened him. Rawlings said that Smith entered his house around 2:30 a.m. Monday to pick up some property, and that the two got into an argument due to the time. Rawlings said Smith fired a gun outside the residence and threatened to kill him.

Hanson and Sgt. Donald Shead spoke with Smith, who said he had fired the weapon to scare away some cats. Smith said the firearm was inside his trailer, and Shead found it along with 33 marijuana plants in the bedroom.

Hanson said Smith became confrontational after the discovery and threatened to kill him. Hanson said Smith also asked where he lived and said he would put a dead cat in the trooper’s mailbox.
