I am writing in support of Elaine Makas, who seeks election as a member of the Androscoggin County Commission.

She has accomplished many things as a community activist. One area where she has demonstrated great concern is her strong support of veterans and their families. That is an issue dear to my heart, as I am a Vietnam veteran.

As a state legislator, she presented a bill to give the Gold Star Medal to parents of military personnel who died in the line of duty since Sept. 11, 2001. She also helped organize a fundraising effort to purchase commemorative park benches for two Lewiston soldiers killed in the war in Iraq.

To carry on the legacy of the fallen, she also helped establish a scholarship fund for high school students.

Voters can be confident that Elaine Makas will bring that kind of concern to her work on the Androscoggin County Commission.
