AUBURN — “Remember it and live by it,” was the advice of the Rev. Richard J. Malone, bishop of the Diocese of Portland, as he reminded the graduates of St. Dominic Regional High School of their school’s motto, Viritas Vitae, which is Latin for “truth for life.”
The 72 members of the Class of 2010 received their diplomas Friday night at the school’s gymnasium in Auburn.
In her valedictory address, Kacie Rioux listed a number of the talents and qualities she saw in her classmates “as we learned about each other.” She told them, “We worked to improve not only ourselves but also our class community. I hope your progress doesn’t stop here.”
Salutatorian Felicia Stewart told the graduating class that integrity is one of the most important qualities they can have.
“I challenge my fellow graduates to be open to new ideas,” she said. She also said their educational foundation at St. Dominic Regional High School “will allow us to follow our dreams, and we should also take advantage of every bump in the road.”
In her remarks, Janet Joseph, chairwoman of the St. Dominic Board of Directors, said, “These graduates are our investment in the future.” She told them, “our future depends on your integrity.” She challenged them to “step up and lead.”
All the graduates received a brief profile in the remarks of Principal Donald Fournier. He spoke about special talents and interests, skills in sports and he often noted individual likes such as colorful clothes.
He noted that his first year as principal was the Class of 2010’s freshman year. His son, Nicholas Fournier, was among the graduates Friday night.
He also commented on the important contributions about 40 seniors made earlier this year when they participated in Mission Mississippi.
“You see here the legacy that started across the river in Lewiston,” he said.
Sister Rosemary Donohue, superintendent of Maine Catholic Schools, told the graduates and family members that the members of the Class of 2010 “leave here spiritually prepared.”
Molly Finn, Class of 2012, sang the national anthem. The pledge of allegiance was led by Hilary Gove, a member of the 2010 graduating class.
The ceremony’s invocation was given by Joshua Charest, a member of the graduating class, and the benediction was given bythe Rev. Robert Vaillancourt.
