Solid foundation

If anyone ever needed any more evidence of the strength of the Lewiston youth tennis program, consider this: Five players in this year’s singles tournament — Devin Van Dyke of Waynflete, Mary Emerson of St. Dom’s, Frankie Lally of Edward Little and Emilie Cloutier and Abby Blaisdell of Lewiston — along with two of last year’s top players, Lewiston’s Mike Butler and Chantalle Lavertu, all competed on the same Maine Tennis Association championship squad that represented the New England region at the national team tennis tourney in 2005-06. Two others — Elliot Chicoine and Conroy LeBlond — are also varsity athletes at Lewiston High School, in lacrosse and baseball, respectively.

In Recovery

Oxford Hills pitcher Heather Verrier is recovering from a line drive that hit her in the forehead in Thursday’s loss to Mt. Ararat. The sophomore pitcher stayed on her feet after getting hit and walked off the field. Coach Cindy Goddard said the day after the incident that Verrier might not pitch in the regular season finale Tuesday, but could be ready for postseason action if the Viking can secure a spot.

Shaking it up

At an Oak Hill softball game last week, Bill Fairchild, the school athletic administrator, offered a challenge to a handful of young male athletes. He promised a chocolate milkshake to the first one that could give him 15 pushups. While the males hesitated while sitting in the bleachers, a young grade school girl jump at the chance. She dropped down and did the 15 pushups while the crowd around her counted them off. She was rewarded with the shake and subsequently shared it with her brother.

Did you know?

• The Bangor High School Rams will enter the playoffs as the only unbeaten team in the state unless Lewiston can pull off a Memorial Day upset. The Blue Devils have a fine season of their own going, with 10 wins in 15 games this season.

• With her win in the 300-meter hurdles at trhe KVAC track and field championships on Saturday, Allison Fereshetian not only set a new personal best, but also a KVAC Class B record in that event. Fereshetian will represent Leavitt at the Class B states at Windham.

• St. Dom’s isn’t necessarily known as a powerhouse in lacrosse, but that’s about to change. The Saints are a win away from wrapping up a perfect regular season, and will lose just three regulars to graduation as they build toward the future.
