WINTHROP – The Winthrop red Sox overcame an early three-run deficit in overwhelming fashion, storming past the Downeast Dodgers, 17-6, in Pine Tree League senior baseball.

Chris Howe, Steve Curtain and Joe Philippon registered early RBIs to give the Dodgers a 3-0 lead in the third. The Sox rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Dave Ricker Jr. and heads-up base running from Matt McCarthy.

Winthrop plated five more runs in the fourth and four in the fifth with key RBI hits from Mike House and Brett Witherell to put the game away. Downeast scored three in the ninth on four consecutive hits, with veteran Rusty Klobas driving in two.

Torey Carr picked up his fourth win of the year, hurling six innings before Dennis McHugh closed it out with six strikeouts over the final three frames. Howe took the loss.

Winthrop’s Eric Palleschi was the big stick on the day, belting two doubles and a triple. Witherell and Ian McCarthy repeated, as well. Dennis Mancini was the only repeater for Downeast.
